PESHAWAR: The provincial capital escaped a major terror attack as two would-be suicide bombers and their facilitator were killed when the explosives they were carrying went off prematurely on the Mullagori Road near Sufaid Sang area early Friday.

“The three terrorists were planning a major attack somewhere in the city, but the suicide jacket of one of them exploded. They were killed before they could reach their target,”SP)Cantonment Kashif Zulfiqar told The News.

Some investigators suspected the two bombers appeared to be foreigners, probably from a Central Asian country. The third one believed to be the facilitator was a local who has been identified.

SP Cantonment Kashif Zulfiqar added that an unexploded suicide jacket and eight hand-grenades were recovered from the site and defused. The area where the incident happened is a deserted road that leads to Khyber and Mohmand agencies.

According to the SP Cantonment, two of those killed seemed to be suicide bombers while the third person is believed to be their handler and facilitator. They were all riding a motorbike to reach their destination while on the way from Mathra side.

“Locals came out after hearing a loud explosion at around 4:16am. The villagers called the police when they saw three bodies and a suspicious jacket on the road,” said Kashif Zulfiqar.

He added that the suspected terrorists were also carrying two semi-automatic machineguns and scores of rounds. “The bodies of the two were mutilated and so were their faces CCPO Mubarak Zeb told The News.

He said the target of the attackers wasn’t known but they were surely looking for something big. He added that the cops were conducting search operations in the area to find any lead about the attackers.
