Actress Sarwat Gilani, who reprised the role of a dominating Pukthun wife in Nadeem Baig’s blockbuster Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2, in a recent interview with BBC Urdu, opened up about her plans to come up with more substantial roles for women in films and on television.

“The formulas, which were used in the past, were a success and people want to carry on with it; they don’t want to experiment,” Sarwat shared. “But it is high time to understand our responsibility. So let’s make films on women, by women, for women.”

The actress further went on to say that she is very good friends with Mahira Khan, Aamina Sheikh and Sanam Saeed, and that they want to work collectively to ensure that women are a part of everything - be it in front of the camera or behind the camera, including girls who can fill in the capacity of spot boys.

She also revealed that she was offered the role of Zareen, that later went on to Aamina Sheikh, in Asim Abbasi’s Cake, which has received recognition at various international film festivals.

“I had to opt out of the film as I was expecting baby number two,” she informed, adding that she felt disappointed that she had to let go of such a project that portrayed women in such a strong light.
