No party to support NRO, says Durrani
Monday, October 19, 2009
AHMADPUR: Former information minister Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani said on Sunday that the tabling of the controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) in parliament was a vicious attempt to divert the attention of the nation from the ‘anti-Pakistan’ Kerry-Lugar Bill (KLB) and this attempt would be foiled by the vigilant media and political parties.

He was addressing a public gathering here regarding with his mass contact campaign in connection with the Bahawalpur province drive. Durrani said no political party would dare support the NRO because it was a black law. “Moreover, all opposition parties are one on opposing the NRO and this black law will be scrapped in the near future with the public and political support,” he added. Durrani warned the government against delaying the local bodies’ elections, saying this step could destabilise the entire democratic system.

“The local government system is the nursery of democracy and delaying the LG polls might destabilise the democratic system. “The provincial government must stop playing with the democratic system,” he said, adding the media, the civil society and political parties should pressure provincial governments to hold the local government polls at the earliest.
