ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s sudden visit to Imran Khan’s citadel-like Bani Gala residence on the bank of picturesque Rawal Lake on Saturday night is being taken as a conspicuous political event.
People belonging to all shades of life were invited except President Asif Ali Zardari. The host sarcastically said on the podium that he deliberately avoided inviting Zardari because of the enormous security involved. Had he (the president) been invited and something happened to him, he (Imran) would have been the prime suspect in the case, he remarked.
The prime minister, discarding the advice of the security personnel, decided to attend the launching ceremony of the Namal Knowledge City. He was received by Imran Khan and his sisters. The people who are assisting Imran Khan in establishing educational and health institutions and his admirers from various parts of the country were present in large number. The elite of the twin-cities, diplomats of important countries, including the US and the UK, were also present.
The event started with a video on a large screen with jubilant Imran Khan receiving the World Cup trophy that he won for Pakistan. The guests clapped on seeing it. The documentary also showed achievements of Khan in the fields of health and education.
Former federal minister Razzaq Dawood gave a detailed account of Imran Khan’s efforts in the two fields. Khan, in his brief address, welcomed Gilani and said that he is determined to provide world-class education to the people of this backward where no female teacher or nurse was ready to work.
Eulogising the courage of the prime minister for coming to the launching ceremony, Imran Khan revealed that his wife had declined to send his children to the function for security reasons. The guests whispered when he did not use the word ‘former’ while referring to his wife.
Gilani was in a pleasant disposition. He recounted the services of his ancestors in the field of education and health. The prime minister said that education and health were his government’s priority areas.
