Protests for release of Editor-in-Chief: Jang/Geo Group Action Committee appeals to postpone demos
KARACHI: The Jang-Geo Group Action Committee has appealed to journalists, trade unionists and civil society to put off the country-wide protest demonstrations for the release of the Jang Geo Group Editor-in-Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman and against his victimization at the hands of the National Accountability Bureau in a 34-year-old case.
In a statement issued on the occasion of the Pakistan Day, the action committee remarked that postponing the demonstration until further decision was a reminder that the group chooses to consolidate the efforts to strengthen the country in these hard times of the Coronavirus pandemic.
They said that the protest against the illegal moves by the NAB will continue with all the precautionary measures to combat and prevent the viral disease. They said the arrest of Jang Geo Group Editor-in-Chief was illegal and unconstitutional as it amounted to suppress the free press in the country. They demanded the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take notice of the issue and intervene to prevent the total silence of the independent voices from the populace.
They said the arrest was incomprehensible and an unprecedented move. They added that the protest will continue at the offices of the Jang/ Geo Group but postponing the demonstrations was in line of ensuring the safety of the people across the country.
